In het subtiel betitelde artikel “F*cked Up Video of a Clam,” Kelly Faircloth van de Amerikaanse weblog Jezebel liet het publiek op internet kennis maken met een zenuwslopende video van een geoduck, die zijn weg probeer te vinden in nat zand.
Deze video, oorspronkelijk gepost op Facebook door een natuurgids uit Oregon, is heeft iets zeer aparts. Het ziet er verschrikkelijk uit maar toch blijf je kijken.
Het wezentje in de video is een scheermesschelp uit de Pacific, hoewel het ontzettend veel op een geoduck lijkt. Zo erg zelfs dat een gerenommeerde bioloog er naast zat:

Het beestje graaft zich in het zand om te kunnen overleven, aldus Earth Touch News. Als de schelp boven het zand blijft, zal het uitdrogen. Het natte strand biedt bescherming.
Dit is de verklaring van Earth Touch’s over het grafen van de schelp:
That wriggling noodle on the right side of the clam is the muscular foot, a structure that both pushes sand out of the way and acts as an anchor to pull the animal to the desired destination. On the other end is one of the siphons, tube-like straws that move water over the gills … which brings us to the momentous eruption at the end of the clip. While many commenters online have suggested the clam is expelling the remnants of a large meal, that brown eruption is a combination of water and sand.
